Ashington was once the centre of the coal mining industry, it now features a local museum at Woodhorn Pit, which showcases the towns mining history with pictures and models. Also located close by is Queen Elizabeth II country Park.

The town centre includes various retail units, recently the town has seen the development of a new state of the art leisure facility and bus station making transport very accessible to the surrounding villages including Stakeford, Pegswood and Newbiggin By The Sea.

Newbiggin By The Sea in particular is located only 3 miles from Ashington and is on the beautiful North East coastline. This area has seen a huge investment in the promenade and beach area attracting an increase in holiday makers and outside investors.
